Routine maintenance

Engine oil

While it may seem like a dirty and messy job at first, you will be surprised to know oil checks are pretty straighforward. Oil levels should be checked routinely.  To do that, once the engine is turned, wait a few minutes for the oil to settle. Start by  removing the dipstick from your engine. Towards the lower end, you can see high and low level markings. Ideally, the level of engine oil should be between those two points. Wipe the oil from the dipstick before putting it back in and repeat this process if necessary . If need be, add oil until the ideal mark is reached.  Be sure to only add oil that is right for your vehicle.

One cannot overemphasize the importance of oil changes.  The engine is the most important component of the vehicle, therefore, changing the oil regularly according to the recommended schedule is very important.  This is especially crucial if you own a second-hand vehicle or older vehicle. Changing oil can effectively flush out abrasives that find their way into your engine.

Additionally, the oil filter should also be changed everytime you change your oil so as not to mix and contaminate the new oil with the old one.

While seemingly trivial, the abovementioned processes can definitely help prolong your vehicle’s life. To find the appropriate oil and oil filter, you may visit Authentic Spare Parts.

Spark plugs

For good engine performance and proper fuel mileage, spark plugs should  be replaced every 50,000 km (approximately 31,000 miles). Aside from changing your spark plugs whenever necessary, make sure to also purchase the right one from your vehicle only from reliable suppliers such as  Authentic Spare Parts.

Air filters

While unknown to many, a dirty or blocked air filter can dramatically hasten engine wear, resulting in elevated fuel consumption and poor performance. Air filters need changing every 10,000km (approximately 7,000) or every 15 to 18 months.

Fortunately, changing is fast and easy. Once you locate and remove the dirty filter, use a rag to clean the air box. Vehicleefully place your new filter in the housing, making sure it is properly aligned on both sides. After replacing the lid and the fasteners, you can close the hood.

While seemingly inconsequential, changing your air filters when necessary can do wonders for your vehicle. Apart from prolonged engine life, it will also dramatically enhance fuel efficiency while reducing vehicle emissions at the same time.

Wiper blades

Numerous factors can thwart the performance of wiper blades and your visibility. Oil, dirt, sunlight and airborne contaminants are just some of the elements that can reduce their effectiveness and performance.  Ideally, wiper blades should be  changed every 6 months or every 10,000km.

However, if your wiper blades are already malfunctioning, you are advised to change them immediately before they cause accidents.

When replacing wiper blades, you may have two options available at your disposal, depending on the type of wiper blades you have installed on your vehicle. You can choose to  change the wiper blades including assembly and refills to insure proper fit. If you want to opt for a more affordable change however, you can replace the refills alone, but you need to consider that properly pulling this entails a certain level of skill and expertise.

Tires

Routinely inspect your tires not just for uneven wear, but also for proper inflation and alignment.  A tire that is properly aligned, inflated and balanced will give you’re a much better performance and longevity.  Generally, replacing your tire every 50,000 km, or when necessary, is considered ideal. In addition, consider visiting your auto service provider if you feel anything unusual with the tires.

Before you start cleaning your engine, make it a point to first secure the air intake, distributor and electrical parts with a plastic bag. Use a brush and detergent or engine cleaner to scrub off dirt then wash them thoroughly.

Exterior

For the external parts, a traditional garden hose can be your trusted ally. However, when dealing with surface contaminants, you need the help of a detailing clay as in most cases, simple washing will not suffice. Wash your car thoroughly and dry with the right cloth for nice exterior clean.

Preserving your automobile’s paint quality might seem like a tall feat, however it can be done very easily.  While often overlooked, waxing can actually do more than just make your vehicle look brand new. More importantly, it helps protect your vehicle’s paint from pollution brought about by oxidation. All things considered, it is safe to assume waxing can do more than just enhance the aesthetic appeal of your vehicle.
